Peter B. Manning

AMHERST, MASS.—Peter Burnam Manning, 71, professor emeritus in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University of Massachusetts, died Thursday, March 15, 2007 of cardiopulmonary arrest.

He was born May 24, 1935 in Rochester, the son of George Edward and Esther Pollard Manning. The family moved to Bethel, where he spent his early years and graduated from high school in 1953. In 1957 he received a B.S. in Dairy Science from the University of Vermont.

He married Winifred Hill in 1958 and moved to Rhode Island, where their sons Craig and Bruce were born in 1959 and 1962, and where he finished a M.S. degree at the University of Rhode Island. The family moved to St. Paul, Minn., where son Andrew was born in 1965. He completed a Ph.D. in Food Science at the University of Minnesota in 1969.

In 1972 the family came to Amherst, where he joined what was then the Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Travel Administration at UMass. He served as Associate Head and Acting Head of the department, and was awarded a Fulbright Distinguished Professorship in 1986. He retired in 1999.

An avid skier and member of the National Ski Patrol, he patrolled at Berkshire Snow Basin, West Cummington, Mass. in the 1970s and 80s. He volunteered at the Amherst Senior Center and the Chamber of Commerce tourist information booth.

Survivors include three sons: Craig and partner Becky, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Bruce and wife, Yutian. of San Francisco, Calif. and Champaign, Ill.; and Andrew and wife, Cheryl, of Evergreen, Colo.; three grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Tamsen and Tom Chase of Colchester; and his former wife of 47 years, Winifred (Freddie) Manning.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 31 at 12 noon at the First Congregational Church in Amherst, Mass.
