Chandler Music Hall Will Welcome
The internationally acclaimed Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum will make a rare concert appearance at Chandler Music Hall in Randolph Sunday afternoon, April 15 at 4 p.m. Hailed as a "remarkable choir" by the Boston Globe, the singers will perform a program they are polishing in preparation for a three-week tour to Australia this summer. Choral music at Harvard and Radcliffe has a long and distinguished career. The Harvard Glee Club was the first university chorus to start performing masterpieces of choral music, instead of just the lighter songs or "glees" that other college singers performed at the time. A bit later, the Radcliffe Choral Society established a strong reputation of its own as a women’s chorus. The Collegium Musicum was founded in the fall of 1971 to coincide with the coeducational merger of Harvard and Radcliffe. Initially conceived as a chamber ensemble of singers from the Glee Club and Choral Society, the Collegium’s popularity mushroomed the ensemble to its present size of 60 voices. The Collegium’s membership is made up of students from all areas of Harvard’s curriculum, both undergraduate and graduate. Most singers are not music majors, and do not plan on careers in music, although many are experienced musicians. Under the direction of Jameson Marvin since 1978, the Collegium has received critical acclaim for its repertoire of six centuries of choral music, sometimes a capella and sometimes with distinguished orchestras. The ensemble has created more than a dozen recordings of major works and has regularly been invited on international tours ever since its founding. It has traveled abroad seven times: once to northern Europe, twice to the Mediterranean countries, once to the west coast of the U.S. and Canada, and to Mexico, Great Britain, France, and Spain. In its upcoming Australian tour, the Collegium Musicum will perform in venues as diverse as the Sidney Opera House and the Jenolan Caves. In the interest of building support for choral music everywhere, a reception after the Chandler concert will be hosted for the ensemble and the audience members by the chorus, Sounding Joy! of Randolph. Tickets for this concert may be ordered in advance by calling the box office at 728-6464 or online at www.Chandler-arts.org, and they will also be available at the door. Prior to the concert, the performance sponsor, the Harvard-Radcliffe Club of Vermont, will hold its spring meeting at the Chandler Gallery. A panel discussion on the Creative Economy concept in Vermont will be followed by an introduction to the history of Chandler Music Hall and tours of the facility. Any interested person who did not receive the club’s publicity letter of this event is still invited join the group in the gallery at 2:30 p.m. This performance is presented by Chandler Center for the Arts. For more information, visit www.Chandler-arts.org or the Collegium web site at www.hrcm.net. Chandler Music Hall is wheelchair accessible. ____________ |
