Kids Do More I am totally disgusted with your abundent lopsided and immature coverage of local young people. You seem to think what makes a young person worthy of "news" coverage is how many baskets, goals, strikeouts and homeruns they have achieved. Your last edition was titled "The Herald's Young People's Achievment Issue". I was excited when I purchased it but soon became very disappointed. Yes there were finally some articles about young people achieving in fields other than sports. But again in your sports section the two pictures were of boys practicing, since the seasons have not officially gotten underway. As far as sports coverage, why aren't there ever pictures of recreation teams and articles about these young kids? Only varsity teams get pictures etc. in the paper. Where is coverage of JV teams, junior high, recreation and onwards? Instead in at least the last two issues you've wasted space telling your readers to look for the "Spring Sports Section" including team pictures, schedules and players’ names. Again lopsided immature and excessive coverage for one small group of young people and their achievements. Away from sports why is there rarely if not any coverage of all the other wonderful achievements of local youngsters? Music, arts, academics, scouting, rangers, community involvement, volunteering etc., the list could go on. Choosing to dedicate one issue for young people's achievements aside from varsity sports is doing a great injustice for all the special kids, their families and communities. Maybe if more time and space was given to recognizing so many different qualities and achievements of so many worthy "young people," there would be less need for all the articles involving breaking the law. Sports does not make the world go ‘round. It takes so many different talents to make this a better world for us ALL to live in. Lisa Backhaus Royalton |
