Richmond Young

MONTPELIER — Richmond "Dick" Alton Young, 95, of Montpelier, died following a short illness at Rowan Court Health and Rehab on April 7, 2007.

He was born April 24, 1911, in Sterling, Conn., the son of Byron Patrick and Lucy Emily Richmond Young. He married Pauline Mildred Dane August 5, 1936 in Cabot. He attended schools in Connecticut, received a Bachelor of Science degree in education at the University of Connecticut in 1934 and a master’s of education degree at the University of Vermont in 1950.

He taught school in Cabot, Middlebury and Bombay, N.Y. He was principal of the Vermont School of Agriculture, director of the Vermont Agricultural & Technical Institute, and president of Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center from 1951-1964. He was employed at Vermont College in Montpelier until he retired in 1975.

He received numerous awards and honors during his career. He was active in the community and in church activities and enjoyed painting. He and his wife loved to square dance, play bridge, attend musical concerts and take trips to Maine. He also enjoyed making things and was a true handy-man.

He was predeceased by his older brother, Byron Herbert; his twin brother, Raymond Milton; and his wife, Pauline Dane Young.

Survivors include his son, David and his wife Cindy of Venice, Calif.; his daughter, Janice of Richmond; two grandsons, Alexander and Andrew; a granddaughter, Julia; three great-grandsons, Dylan, Maxamillian and Emmet; and several nieces and nephews.
