Glen A. Button

CHELSEA—Glen Amasa Button, 92, died Saturday, May 5, 2007 at the Rowan Court Health & Rehabilitation Center in Barre.

He was born September 12, 1914 in Chelsea, the son of Amasa Patterson Button and Grace Julia (Bowin) Button. He attended schools in Chelsea at the District #5 School, and Chelsea High School and graduated from the Vermont School of Agriculture in Randolph in 1933. He worked as a tester for DHIA until 1937 when he purchased the farm from his great uncle, Ernest Young on the West Hill in Chelsea.

He was married February 11, 1936 to Irene Emma Titus of Verhsire. He and his wife, six sons and two daughters operated the Jersey dairy farm and later raised Holsteins, as well as chickens and pigs. A fire in 1942 destroyed the farm building which they rebuilt and a second fire destroyed the farmhouse in 1966. He then moved to the "Richmond Place" in Tunbridge. He trained Belgian and Percheron draft horses and riding horses, and raised baby pigs with the help of his children and grandchildren until his retirement.

He held several town offices and served on many committees in Chelsea, and was a school director and lister. He also served as a lister for the Town of Tunbridge. He was a member of the United Church of Chelsea, Orange County and Vermont Farm Bureau, Lady Washington Chapter #86 of Order of Eastern Star, a 65-year member of the George Washington Lodge #51 F.&A.M., director of Washington Electric Cooperative, Federal Land Bank, Production Credit Association.

He won the first New England Green Pastures award in 1952 for his farm improvements. He enjoyed horse pulling, showing animals at country fairs and dancing. He danced many years with the Ed Larkin Contra Dancers.

Survivors include his children: Norman and Betsy Button and Richard and Bunny Button of Chelsea, Joseph and Lucia Button of Bradford, John and Starr Button of Brookfield, Peter and Deb Button of Tunbridge, Grace and Leonard Korzun of Shrewsbury, Mary Jane and Donald Hayward of East Barre, and Ione Button Battles of South Washington; a sister, Ethel Hazen of Northfield; a brother, Clarence (Joe) Button of South Royalton; 25 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

He was predeceased by his wife, Irene in 1988; his companion, Marion Montgomery, in 1999; a son, Edward Button; a daughter-in-law, Lucy (McCullough) Button; two sisters, Edna Moulton and Claudia O’Donnell; and a brother, Arthur Button.

Calling hours were held at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home on Main Street, Chelsea Wednesday, May 9. A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 10 at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Chelsea, with Rev. Diana Benjamin officiating. Burial will take place at the Highland Cemetery in Chelsea.
