Photographers To Capture Sixteen photographers have volunteered to spend part of this Memorial Day, May 28, photographing the events, people and places of Tunbridge as part of an effort to raise money for repairs to the Tunbridge Church steeple. Tucked into one of Vermont's most scenic valleys, the village of Tunbridge has appeared in numerous photographs in well-known publications, ranging from local newspapers to Vermont Life and National Geographic magazines, as well as in photographs taken for the renowned WPA/Farm Security Administration's documentation of life in Depression-era America during the 1930s. The Tunbridge church's steeple is an iconic part of the village landscape, explained Geoff Hansen of Tunbridge, who is spearheading the project. Now, the steeple is in need of $50,000 in repairs. George White and his crew removed the steeple in late April, so that work can be done on the ground. Thus, fundraising is needed and thus, Hansen’s idea of a "Day in the Life of Tunbridge." The holiday is an eventful one in town, he noted. The library's annual plant sale, book sale, a special church service, a parade and the fire department's chicken barbeque are annual traditions. In addition to town events, photographers will be looking for people and places in town to photograph. Hill farmers, glass blowers, store owners, families, artists and elderly residents are all likely candidates. After the photography is done on Memorial Day, Hansen will print and frame up to 50 photographs for a show and silent auction sometime in the summer. Donations towards the cost of printing and framing, which will cost about $1000, are being accepted. Hansen also welcomes ideas about people and places that should be included in the photographs. He may be contacted at info@geoffhansen.com Among the 16 photographers lined up for "Day in the Life" are Herald photographer Tim Calabro and our former photographer/writer Amelia Lincoln. |
