The Hornets boys’ team hosted the D-III South Royalton Royals Tuesday and lost to their guests 12-zip. The Hornets started strong, retiring their opponents 1-2-3 and 4-5-6 while the Royals matched suit before anybody scored. South Royalton eased across the plate with two runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and six in the seventh for their 12-run tally. Although the game was a shutout, it came from "small plays and bad choices" that allowed for batters getting on base off errors and not from big hits, stated Whitcomb coach Mike Crane. Loss to Concord On Monday, May 14 the Hornets took the long bus ride to Concord and faced the Wildcats for the first time this season and lost to their hosts 10-5. Concord’s lead-off batter and second-ups batter both got things started with back-to-back home runs and scored an additional run in the bottom of the first. They then added four more runs in the second inning before Whitcomb scored in the third, when Ben Cayer walked to get on, and scored before the inning ended. The Hornets added four more runs in the sixth inning when Dan Noel, Ben Cayer and Joel Wright all walked to get on, and all crossed the plate. Deven Hill doubled and scored for the last Hornet run of the inning, as well as the game. Whitcomb faces the Wildcats tomorrow in Bethel for a rematch and hopes to return the favor with their first victory of the season. The Hornets play Blue Mountain on Monday, May 22 and then welcome the D-III Rivendell Raptors to Bethel on Friday, May 25 for "Senior Recognition." ____________ |
