The Whitcomb girls traveled to Plainfield and faced the Twinfield Trojans for their only meeting of the season and fell to their hosts 6-3. Pitcher Kate Martin had a good day at both ends of the bat, striking out five Hornets and scoring two of her team’s six runs. Molly Taylor was 2-for-4 for Whictomb and scored one run. It was a "sweep" for the Whitcomb Hornets who defeated the Rockettes in Rochester Monday, May 28, in their last game of the regular season. Whitcomb defeated Rochester in Bethel May 7, 16-15 and it was another one-run loss Monday 6-5. An RBI by Tia McKenna in the top of the seventh scored Emily Wright, putting the Hornets up by one, and that is where they remained after Whitcomb retired the Rockettes in the bottom. With one out, Allison Richards fielded a ground ball and tagged the runner heading to second and then threw to first for the final out. Richards, a freshman, has been in that same fielding situation all season and has come up big for her team each and every time The Lady Hornets finish the regular season with 11 wins and 5 losses heading into the play-offs. Senior Night Win It was "Senior Recognition" last Friday in Bethel as the Hornets welcomed the Rivendell Raptors to town. Five Raptor seniors and Hornets Maggie Eddy, Megan Morse and Kerstin Krautlein were recognized. (Senior Chelsie Brown was absent.) The Hornets handed their guest a 7-2 revenge match defeat. Whitcomb came up big in the third after holding the raptors scoreless in the top of the inning. Virginia Wortman singled, followed by an Emily Abbot walk, and both scored off a Molly Taylor double that landed the hitter at third after Rivendell misplayed the ball. A dropped third strike put Allison Richards on for an RBI after she beat the throw and scored Taylor. Emily Wright singled and moved over on an overthrow, then scored off Eddy’s triple. Eddy scored off McKenna’s fielder’s choice for a five-run takeover by the Hornets. Singles by Taylor and Richards netted the Hornets an additional run (Taylor stole home) in the bottom. Whitcomb held the Raptors scoreless again in the sixth before they earned their last run of the game after Brittany Washburn singled to right field and then scored of Taylor’s single. 15-8 Over Bucks The Hornets got the best of the Blue Mountain Bucks when they beat their guests 15-8 last Monday in Bethel. Hornets Wortman, Taylor, Eddy, Wright and Morse came up big for Whitcomb in the outing. Freshman Wortman earned her first varsity win pitching 5 and 1/3 innings, and Taylor finsihed the game, striking out five in 1 and 2/3 innings. On the other end of the ball Eddy had a triple and two RBIs and went 3-for-3. Wright went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Morse had two RBIs and was 2-for-4. 14-7 Loss The Hornets found it tough going in Ludlow when they played the Black River Presidents in their only outing of the season, a 14-7 defeat. The game was tied 2-2 after two, but nine additional runs by Black River in the fourth and two in the fifth had the Hornets down by 11. Whitcomb did come back somewhat but were unable to catch Black River. The Hornets also defeated Concord last week, 11-6. Brittany Washburn went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. SoRo defeated Bethel last week, 4-1 in a good game. ____________ |
