Poor Response
On School Issue

Apparently the quality of School Supt. Brent Kay's mercy is strained through a gauzy film of situational ethics and convenience. In his remarks concerning the extent of drug use in our (his) school among our children, he states he hears "people say there is a drug problem in the school. I say there is not—there is a drug problem in the community."

Strong rhetoric indeed from our top educator. However, he posits an argument that perhaps indicates a detachment from reality as well as a lack of understanding of the role of our educators and school in the fabric of our community.

Ergo, I suggest with all respect that the superintendent be reminded that RUHS and its student athletes are indeed and foremost a part of the community. Further, I would suggest to him that as top educator he develop a better understanding of "what works" when dealing with the hard choices and challenges our growing youngsters face.

Not the least of these are substance abuse and the silent abuse of some parents, educators, and other adults who turn away from the obvious because they wish to be good buddies or not deprive a kid of a privilege he/she should have earned and continued to earn by playing by the rules and living up to expectations.

Admittedly, I do not have all the facts to which Mr. Kay and the Board were privy; however, as the parent of a RUHS grade eight student and as a retired eductator and athletic coach, I have to say the penalties were less than a slap on the wrist; more like a pat on the back and a tacit approval to go ahead with that sort of behavior.

A show of "strength" without consistency, understanding, and follow through is just a cover-up for weakness and poor leadership.
