Suzanne Hayward

CHELSEA—Suzanne W. Hayward, 67, died Monday, June 11, 2007 at her home.

She was born September 10, 1939 in Barre, the daughter of Merrill R. and Katherine (Ryder) Whitney. She grew up and attended school in Chelsea, graduating from Chelsea High School in 1956. She continued her education at the University of Vermont, receiving her bachelors degree in mathematics in 1960.

Shortly after finishing her schooling, she went to work for the Union Mutual Fire Insurance Company in Montpelier. In the later part of her career, which spanned 45 years, she worked as a computer programmer, retiring in 2005.

She married Charles L. Hayward November 3, 1991 in the Chelsea West Hill Methodist Church and they lived on Hayward Crossroad during their entire marriage.

She often helped her husband at his work at Emslie’s Flower shop in Barre. She was a member and trustee of the Chelsea West Hill Methodist Church. She liked tending to both her vegetable and flower gardens. She loved flowers and music and enjoyed singing. Most of all she loved her family.

Survivors include her husband, of Chelsea; three sisters: Lucille Whitney and Sally Sanford, both of Chelsea, and Jean Gilman of Wiliamstown; an aunt, Marcia Lyman of Chelsea; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Phyliss W. Williamson.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 17 at 2 p.m. at the Chelsea West Hill Methodist Church, with Shirley Nolan and John Kilian officiating. Burial will be in the East Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chelsea West Hill Methodist Church, c/o Jean L. Gilman, 94 Covey Road, Williamstown, Vt. 05679.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home on Main Street in Chelsea.
