The Montpelier Legion Post 3 team lost to Hartford 7-6, and Champlain 10-4 this week. At Hartford, Cody Montgomery pitched the first two innings, and held Hartford scoreless, while getting out of a bases-loaded jam. Mitch Thresher pitched the middle innings, and David Maxfield closed out the game throwing the fifth and sixth innings. Montpelier opened things up first in the second inning. Thomas Jacobs and Thresher led off with singles, and Jacobs came home after an Austin Parker fielder’s choice to the shortstop. Post 3 added a pair of runs in the third after Mike Czok singled, and Jacobs went over the left field off a school bus with a two-run homer to make it 3-0. Hartford, however, stormed right back and answered with three runs to knot the game up. In the sixth, Montpelier broke the tie after a single by Maxfield, Nathan Segale, and an error to score Maxfield. In the Hartford half of the inning , they retaliated in a big way, scoring four, three of which were on errors. Montpelier wouldn’t go away quietly. With one out, Parker managed to get on base via an error, and was hit around to third base by a Colin Arisman blooper to right-center. Montgomery then sent a liner to right, plating Parker. Zach LeBlanc joined the hit parade and sent a single to left field and scored Arisman to bring Post 3 within one. With runners on first and second with one out, a perfect groundball to the shortstop allowed him to turn an unassisted double-play to end Montpelier’s comeback, and end the game with Post 3 down, 7-6. Saturday’s Game On Saturday Montpelier faced Champlain and took the loss, 10-3. Montgomery took the mound to start the game but was replaced in the third by Eli Sherman. Czok finished the game. Champlain’s pitcher had a no-hitter going into the fourth inning. Parker nailed a double, followed by a double from Tim Grandy for Post #3’s first run of the game. Jacobs hit Grandy in with a double and at the end of four it was 8-2, Champlain. Montpelier’s final run came in the bottom of the sixth with Czok hitting a lead off double, followed by a single from Jacobs and a single by Mitch Thresher that plated Czok. Post 3 played Tuesday against Colchester at Centennial Field, yesterday against OEC at Montpelier High School, and against Hartford at 10, and Franklin at 4 on Saturday at the Mountaineers field in Montpelier. ____________ |
