RCMS’ Peter Schenkman Memorial The Rochester Chamber Music Society in association with the Vermont Festival of the Arts, will present Toronto-based conductor and pianist Yuri Meyrowitz in a memorial concert in honor of the late cellist, Peter Schenkman, Sunday, Aug. 5 at the Rochester Federated Church. A pre-concert talk by Larry Hamberlin will begin at 3:30 p.m., with the concert at 4 p.m. Meyrowitz has gained recognition for his musical abilities since his earliest years. He won an award from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation at the age of nine, prompting his family’s move to New York, where he was granted a full scholarship to study with the legendary Rosina Lhevinne. His teachers at the Julliard School and Mannes College of Music included Edward Steuermann, Nadia Reisenberg, Olga Strumillo and Stefan Wolpe among others. Meyrowitz has appeared in numerous broadcasts for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, has concertized extensively throughout North America and Europe, and currently devotes most of his time to musicological research, chamber music, and teaching. His piano playing has been hailed for its "great intensity and sensitivity, lyricism," and "exceptional artistry" by Frank Hruby, of the Cleveland Press, as well as its "breathtaking pianistic power" by Claude Gingras, of La Presse in Montreal. The August 5 program will include Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 10, No. 1, Schumann’s Sonata in F-minor, Op. 14, Eduard Tubin’s "Variations on an Estonian Folktune," Debussy’s Images-2nd Series; #1 "Cloches, à travers les feuilles", #3 "Poissons d’or," Chopin’s Mazurka in C-sharp minor, Op. 50, No. 3, Nocturne in D-flat major, Op. 27, No. 2, and Scherzo B-flat minor, Op. 31.
