George F. Watson

ROCKINGHAM—George F. Watson, 63, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 25, 2007.

He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on May 25, 1944, the son of Frank and Katherine (Golinski) Watson. He was a graduate of Bellows Falls High School and went on to work as a farmer in Bartonsville. He also worked in surrounding mills, shops, and as a carpenter’s helper.

He served nearly six years in the U.S. Army, with four tours in Vietnam. He earned the rank of sergeant with the following recognitions: National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal (1st OLC).

On Oct. 28, 1995, in Tunbridge, he married Pamela Blakeney of Tunbridge.

He had many interests and hobbies, such as making jewelry from natural stones, gathering elderberries and making jam to share with family and friends. He also dabbled in taking pictures of squirrels, which won him blue ribbons at the Tunbridge World’s Fair. He loved his old Harley motorcycle and would enter it in the "Rat Class" competitions, again taking blue ribbons, of which he was very proud.

Raising Pygmy goats became one of his later full-time passions, and in springtime, he would have as many as 70 bouncing around his fields. Each goat was given a name that had special meaning to him and his wife. From the goat milk, he made a soft cheese that his wife would turn into cheesecakes.

Growing trees from seed and raising plants was another of his interests. Christmas cacti in several colors filled their windows and shelves.

He possessed a talent for fixing things, whether it was electrical, auto, plumbing, or keeping the tractors running. A thrifty man, he would always look for used parts first.

He slouchy old straw hats were his trademark.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela; two brothers, Carl Watson of Westminster and Anthony Watson of Hampton, N.H.; a son, Franklin of Rockingham; his in-laws, Ken and Clara Hutchins and Charles Blakeney, all of Tunbridge; nieces and a nephew.

He was predeceased by his parents.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 30, in Bellows Falls. Burial, with full military honors, was at the Veterans Cemetery in Randolph.
