The second year of the Randolph Team Tennis League saw an increase in the number of players from 28 in 2006 to 40 in 2007. Participants represented 11 towns in central Vermont with players coming from as far away as Moretown and Woodstock to play tennis on either Tuesday or Thursday night at the VTC courts.

Each team match consisted of one men’s doubles, one women’s doubles, and one mixed doubles. Four teams comprised of five men and five women each played a total of 48 doubles matches during June, July, and early August. During the 2007 season there were 105 sets and 833 games played. Ten matches were determined by third set tie-breakers.

Here were the final standings before the playoff action:

Team Record Sets Won

Ad-outs 4-2 24

Nettles 4-2 21

Court Jesters 3-3 17

Unf.Errors 1-5 18

However, during the playoffs, the championship match was won by Sue Sytsma’s Nettles, in a 3-0 victory over the Ad-outs. Winners of the Consolation Match were The Unforced Errors, captained by Christy Fry, whose team defeated The Court Jesters 2-1.

Players Help Repair Courts

Some members of the Randolph Team Tennis League, deeply involved in tennis beyond summer league play, during February 2007 formed a committee with the acronym COURTS.

The goal of the committee was to raise funds for the reconstruction of the Randolph village tennis and basketball courts to supplement the $53,000 the Town of Randolph had already designated for the project. Efforts of the COURTS (Community of United Randolph Tennis Supporters) committee have resulted in raising approximately $25,000 from various sources.

Tennis players themselves have contributed over $10,000 of the total amount needed for this reconstruction project. The total costs of reconstructing two tennis courts and the basketball court with lighting are approximately $85,000, so the COURTS committee will continue to solicit funds needed to complete the reconstructed facility.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to this project, checks should be made out to "Tennis Court Reserve Fund" and mailed to Treasurer, Town of Randolph, PO Box B, Randolph, VT 05060.
