C.A.K.E. ‘Spruce Up’ Day On Saturday, Aug. 11, C.A.K.E. (Community Action Kindling Education) sponsored a Bethel Schools "Spruce Up" Day. Parent volunteers completed the exterior painting of the support posts for the canopy from the elementary school entrance around to the rear entrance to that building. The elementary classroom exterior doors were painted alternating bright primary colors including red, orange, yellow and blue. With donations of perennials, the garden boxes on the elementary building were replenished. The gardens were weeded and mulch was put in place. Probably most obvious is the improvement to the sign on the school’s front lawn, which was painted and new letter tracking installed. Lighting was also added to ease nighttime viewing. Finally, the group painted and completely redecorated the teacher and staff room. One parent also constructed and mounted a new mailbox for the elementary staff. The funds for most of the paint and supplies were available due to the support of the community at the Bethel Rotary Club Penny Sale refreshment booth on July 28. Other contributors include the Whitcomb Boosters, Lukana’s Dream, Mills Hardware, and Carla Hodgdon. Pizza for the volunteers was donated by Bethel’s Cockadoodle Pizza Café. John Hubble and the entire janitorial staff at the school also offered substantial assistance by getting the school ready for the crowd of parent volunteers and by making the school’s ladders and other equipment available. "We really appreciate the community support and everyone’s hard work and contributions to this project," said Beth Umba of C.A.K.E. "Seeing the faces of the children when they spotted the brightly colored entrances to the classrooms was what it was all about. C.A.K.E hopes to continue to sponsor volunteer projects such as this one to show how dear our school is to this community." ____________ |
