Reasons To Vote
For New Gym

We are writing this letter in support of the building project for the South Royalton School. Even though all of our children have already gone through the school system we feel strongly that the project will address issues that the school and the community is and has been facing.

• Safety. The project includes a new entrance to the school, which would funnel all visitors to one location instead of the three or four entrances that exist now. This would allow office staff to know who is in the building at all times.

For too long the kids playing basketball have had to play on a court that is too small. This is dangerous to them as well as spectators. Having been to many games over the years we have witnessed ball players diving into the stands to try to save a ball from going out of bounds. Or into the stage. We have been lucky that no one has been seriously injured.

Having a regulation size court would also allow South Royalton to actually host playoff games instead of having to travel to Chelsea or Hartford.

• Space. The new building will free up the multi-purpose room so that children will no longer have to eat lunch at 10:30 in the morning! It would also allow more flexibility and freedom when scheduling classes.

• Declining enrollment. Yes, our enrollment has been declining. However, if we are proactive, now would be the time to attract new tuition paying students. Enrollment is declining everywhere.

If we have a new facility it would attract students from Tunbridge, Sharon and Chelsea. These kids have to go somewhere, why not South Royalton?

• Community. Over the years we have been amazed at how much our school gets used by the community. There seems to be something going on there all the time. Also encouraging is the number of folks who go to concerts, plays and sporting events. In order to get a good up-front seat at an elementary concert, you have to go an hour early. Tickets to any play in recent years have been sold out. During last year’s boy’s basketball playoff game at the Aud, it seemed like the entire town was there!

• Taxes. No one wants their taxes to go up. Just remember that any tax increase is tied to your income. You only pay a percentage of your income for property taxes. Please be as informed as you can be about this. Go to the polls as an informed voter. Vote YES! on Sept. 11.
