John R. Mayo

HANOVER, N.H.—John R. Mayo, 87, formerly of Fairlee, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2007 at the Hanover Terrace Healthcare in Hanover, N.H.

He was born November 7, 1919 in Randolph, the son of Robert John and Olive (Morrill) Mayo. He was a graduate of Randolph High School and attended Green Mountain College in Poultney, and the University of Maryland.

He served with the United States Army Air Corps from 1940-1945.

He married Laura Bowe of St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1948. He then re-enlisted in the United States Air Force and retired in 1963 as a Master Sergeant. He had been stationed in many places including Newfoundland, Greenland, Washington, D.C. and Anchorage, Alaska.

Throughout the 1950s, he was with the USAF ROTC at Dartmouth College. Following retirement, he owned a small electronics store in Whiter River Junction. He then moved to Grand Marais, Minn. and worked as a fishing guide for several years, before moving back to Tunbridge. He then returned to Black Duck, Minn., where he lived for the past 20 years.

He was an avid dog lover who bred boxers and raised malamutes. He enjoyed sports in his earlier days, including ski jumping, swimming and boxing. He enjoyed hunting and fly fishing throughout his life.

Survivors include his daughter, Deborah Mayo of Fairlee; his son, David Mayo of Prescott, Ariz.; his brother, Malcolm "Mike" Mayo of Maryland; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was also survived by his dog Babe.

He was predeceased by his brother, Morton "Bud" Mayo.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside services with full military honors were held Friday, Sept. 7 at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, N.H.
