Open Season

South Royalton girls started their season on Wednesday the fifth after a cancelled game the previous Thursday due to bad weather. The home game against The Sharon Academy started off well for SoRo. Jackie Bowen scored with an assist by Lauren Farnsworth in the first 10 minutes.

TSA’s goalie Emily Chadwick kept the Royals working, saving 13 balls over the course of the game. By the end of the first half, South Royalton had shot 16 times on goal while The Sharon Academy had shot just two.

The Lady Royals worked quickly to continue their offense in the second half. Alex Honkala scored,assisted by J. Bowen with 17 minutes on the clock. Both teams struggled for control of the ball until Jackie headed one into the goal with an assist from Megan Whitcomb.

A few minutes afterwards, Ada DeFriez of TSA managed to get a shot past goalie Logan Russell. That marked the end of scoring for either team. South Royalton totaled 24 shots on goal, The Sharon Academy shot six. SoRo won 3-1.

Second Win

SoRo’s next game was at home against Rivendell on the seventh, which they won 4-0. Neither team gained much ground except for a few shots on goal here and there.

About twenty five minutes into the game Callie Jozefiak of South Royalton had a phenomenal direct kick that sailed into the goal. That was the end of the action for the first half.

The offense was dominated by South Royalton in the second half; the ball was rarely played on the Raptors’ half of the field. Two minutes in,Heather Burbine pulled off a fantastic goal in the corner with an assist from J. Bowen. Jozefiak also gave another point to SoRo when the ball fell out of the goalie’s hands and into the goal. Not too long after, Molly Bowen scored again for South Royalton, which culminated in a win for SoRo 4-0.

SoRo’s next game is at 4:30 tonight.

The Squad

The South Royalton girls’ varsity team is as follows: Seniors: Lauren Farnsworth, Alex Honkala, Callie Jozefiak, Jane Manby and Heather Burbine. The juniors are Julia Collins, Whitney Dumville, Shona Sanford-Long.

Sophomores include Suzanne Howe, Megan Whitcomb, Krista Rogers, Shanna Duffy, Molly Dumville, Molly Bowen, Jackie Bowen and Logan Russell. The lone freshman is Emma Jozefiak.

Junior Varsity are, juniors: Alyssa Bingham, Rebecca Wilson, Monica Parshley. Sophomores are Katie Murray, Mashia McCullough, Jessica Gray, Kelly Murphy and Troy Tetrault. Freshman players are Roselie Philip, Allison Turner.
