Randolph Boys Soccer
Wins, Ties, and Loses
By David Cooch

The RUHS boy Ghosts were able to record their first win of the season, as well as a loss and a tie in the past week of soccer action. Their collective record stands at 1-2-3 as of today.

The Peoples Game

Randolph finally recorded a win last Wednesday at home against Peoples, 1-0. The game featured a few first half opportunities for both clubs, but thanks to great goal-keeping by Randolph’s Beau Handy and the Wolves’ keeper, the game remained scoreless at the half.

Randolph began to attack more and more in the second half, playing dangerous balls down to strikers Alex Green and Kyle Connolly. On a free kick 40 yards out, the ball sailed to Connolly’s foot, who flicked the ball off his ‘ goalie, and then put the ball away into the open net. Randolph gradually pulled farther and farther back as the game drew to a close, which provided Peoples with extended possession in their offensive half, but the Ghosts defense and keeper prevailed for the 1-0 win.

The Northfield Game

On the 14th Randolph sought revenge at Northfield, who had handed them a 1-0 loss at home. The game had not progressed far when, after a second cross proceeding a corner kick, an unmarked Marauder volleyed the ball in. Action continued, with the Ghosts and the Marauders attempting to catch the defense unawares with through balls. It was Randolph, however, who was able to score off a cross from a deep throw. The ball came across the 18 and Nik Bent, the opposite side winger, put the ball away for the equalizer as the first half came to a close.

The second half saw many scoring chances for Randolph in a well-fought 40 minutes. Notably, Zach Miller was past the final defender and one-on-one with the Northfield goalie when he was tripped from behind, resulting in a yellow card for the defender, and a free kick for Randolph which was not converted. Also a quick shot off a free kick by David Maxfield hit the crossbar. However, at the end of 80 minutes, the score remained 1-0. In the first overtime, Randolph’s midfielders, who had been working hard, found a second wind and were able to support the strikers as Randolph crafted many dangerous chances, but unfortunately did not receive calls on several runs in the opponents’ penalty zone.

In the second overtime, it was all Northfield, and Randolph found themselves thanking their lucky stars as a Northfield strike within the 18 hit squarely on the post. The game finished at 1-1 and the teams walked away from the pitch with a tie.

The U-32 Game

Randolph faced U-32 again at home this past Tuesday looking for a big win to boost them in the standings up from their current position of 14. Early on in the match a controversial yellow card was given to Randolph defender David Whitlock, and a penalty kick as well. The U-32 shooter was able to tuck the ball away nicely in the corner, and Randolph restarted down 1-0. The first half finished uneventfully, with the exception of a Randolph shot on an open net that was deflected by a defender.

In the second half, play resumed with both sides producing chances. But as time wound down, U-32 began to pack it in more and more, giving Randolph frequent opportunities on net. Multiple corners, crosses, and long throws were played into the 18, but it was too dense and Randolph found themselves still one goal down as time expired.

Randolph’s record is now 1-2-3, and they hope to improve it in upcoming away games versus Stowe today, and Springfield next Thursday.
