Louis W. Helmuth

McLEAN, VA.—Louis W. Helmuth, 89, died peacefully September 26, 2007, surrounded by family. He was buried in Stockbridge, September 30, next to Anne Kearney Helmuth, his wife of 41 years.

Born in Washington, D.C. in 1918, he was the eldest of five children, the son of Louis W. Helmuth Sr. and Serena Pugh. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University and Harvard Business School. The Helmuths came to Gay Hill in Stockbridge during the early 1970s.

Survivors include his three daughters and one son: Susan Mullenholz of McLean, Va.; Nancy Wark of Memphis, Tenn.; Anne Borman of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; and Louis W. Helmuth III of Rochester, and their families. He had eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

His life was characterized by a love of flying. As a U.S. Army Air Corps World War II veteran, who attained the rank of major, he served in the North African and European theaters from 1942-43. He was awarded many medals including the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Silver Star Medal for his "coolness and high degree of courage." In addition, he was a test pilot, an executive in the aeronautics industry with Republic Aviation on Long Island, and flew his experimental Long EZ until he was 80 years old.

In lieu of flowers, a fund has been set up to help infants with AVM (arteriovenous malformation) of the brain, a condition that recently took the life of his two-week-old great-granddaughter, Hazel Emery. Please send all donations to NVCF-Hazel’s Fund, Northern Virginia Community Foundation, 8283 Greensboro Drive, McLean, Va. 22102.
