East Central Fiber Network Meeting Held in Tunbridge
By Scott Beavers

A well-attended public informational meeting was hosted by the East Central Fiber Network (ECFiberNet) Monday, Oct. 15 at the Tunbridge Town Hall.

Over 60 people filled the hall to learn about and discuss the growing possibility and proposal of building a community-owned fiber optic network in the Upper Valley to provide homes, businesses and municipalities with high-speed Internet access, telephone and television options within participating towns.

The forward-thinking project is being worked on by a group of volunteers from several surrounding towns. Towns currently involved in the project include Pomfret, Barnard, Norwich, Sharon, Royalton, Thetford, Strafford, Tunbridge, Randolph, Braintree, Vershire, Chelsea, Brookfield, and Williamstown. Other towns have indicated interest as well.

This was the first of five currently scheduled informational meetings intended to familiarize the public with the project, its goals, benefits, possibilities and how to get involved. One major focus is to include the project as an item at Town Meeting.

You can read about ECFiberNet and the project at www.fiber.net. The next public meeting will be held October 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Seven Stars Center in Sharon.
