Night Music? Are you still feeling bereft from VPR’s decision to remove classical music from listeners in central Vermont (and other regions) on their regular stations? I’m aware that IF I had an expensive HD radio or IF I had a computer, I could join the rest of the privileged ones who still can hear classical music. But that is not the case for too many of us. Having talked to several people at the station, I realize that there is NO chance of classical music being reinstated on the regular frequency during the daytime. So, I have a suggestion. VPR should at the very least broadcast classical music from 10 p.m. to midnight. Haven’t many of us ended our day for years with soothing/inspiring music? This month, out of habit, I’ve continued to turn on my night table radio. (Isn’t it a sign of madness when you keep doing the same thing expecting a different outcome?) If you’ve been doing that, you’ve heard the BBC talk for hours about child abuse, Darfur, school violence, and other stirring topics. (Enough to create madness at the end of the day!) It’s not that I don’t like the BBC; I’ve been interested for a long time in the high quality world news Dan Damon broadcasts from 5-6 a.m. But do you realize that VPR now broadcasts the BBD 80 hours a day/night? It’s as if VPR has become an affiliate! VPR will be airing a fund drive soon. I urge you to join me in calling and requesting that classical music be reinstated at 10 p.m. so we disillusioned listeners can at least have a peaceful end after a day of talk, talk, talk.
