Storm Reminds
Her of 1938

On the front page of The Herald November 1 was a picture of the 1927 flood. I was just a year old and I remember my parents, neighbors and friends talking about it, and I remember 11 years later was when the 1938 hurricane came roaring up through the valley. It rained Monday, all night, all day Tuesday and all night. Wednesday we were let out of school an hour early. I think our dear teacher at the time sensed something was going to happen, and it did.

When my Dad came up from the barn about 7 p.m. after milking cows, he said he could hear the trees whacking against each other up in the calf pasture.

The next morning was bright and sunny and the little barn roof had blown off. It came across the road and hit the house. Two doors were taken off two rooms. We nailed over the windows to keep the rain out till they could be replaced. It took the rest of the week for my Dad and my brother to cut and chop trees out of the road.
