Miah Poirier, 13, of Randolph got started deer hunting on the right foot. Her first deer, bagged on Sunday, during Youth Hunting Weekend, weighed 157 pounds and had an impressive eight-point rack.
Miah was in the woods early in the morning when her dad, Matt Poirier, spotted the buck behind her. Dad said she spun around, lined the gun up and got the deer with her first shot. Miah says she high-fived dad and exclaimed "I shot it, Dad!" The Poiriers found the deer 20 to 30 yards from where it was shot.
Miah took the hunter safety course at the Fish & Game Club's conservation camp at Buck Lake in Woodbury last summer and this is her first deer, which is bigger than any deer dad has gotten.
Matt said "It was a great experience for both of us! Way more exciting than shooting one myself."
Proud dad is planning on having the head mounted but mom, Amy, isn't sure if she is ready to have it hung in the living room or not.
Miah is one of four children, one older and younger twin siblings. She is the first to get her hunting license and a deer. She said with a grin on Monday, that "all the boys at school were jealous." She didn't appear to let that bother her very much.
