Runners-Up In Div. IV Soccer By Joseph Bonasera The Chelsea girls’ soccer team defeated Rochester 1-0 in double overtime in the semi-finals last week. The teams were evenly matched with both squads maintaining possession equally. Rochester had a few opportunities when Lydia Hogan, Chelsea's goalkeeper, mis-read the play of the ball, leaving Rochester with an open goal. With just two minutes in regulation, Rochester’s best chance came, but the Rochester player overshot the goal. It seemed that Chelsea was going to play in another potential quadruple overtime until the Red Devils were awarded a corner kick. The kick came to the near post where Rochester's goalie Megan Pratt bobbled the ball and Kim and Michele Upham both scored the winning goal. That win advanced Chelsea to the title game in Pittsford at T&T Field. Title Game The Chelsea girls ended their season with a 2-0 loss to the undefeated Black River Presidents last Saturday. Watching the Black River boys’ team earn a win in penalty kicks seemed to motivate some of the girls on the Black River squad, completing the sweep for Division IV soccer. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie, with Black River pressuring Chelsea's defense but to no avail. A few minutes into the second half, however, the Presidents broke the tie with a shot from about 15 yards out that beat Chelsea keeper Lydia Hogan. The Presidents scored again a few minutes later, giving them a 2-0 advantage. Chelsea continued to fight for the ball, earning promising runs up the field with a few that seemed as if Chelsea was going to creep up the scoreboard. Black River goalie Zoe Trimboli prevented anything from happening, however, giving the President's back–to-back state titles and an undefeated season. ____________ |
