Zachary Wood, son of Marc and Susan Wood of Sharon, was awarded the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout at a ceremony last Sunday afternoon, Nov. 4. Wood is the fourth Scout from his troop to become an Eagle Scout, a rank achieved by only two out of every 100 boys who join Scouting. A crowd of 50 guests joined Sharon Boy Scout Troop 205 at St. Anthony’s Parish Hall to honor Wood’s achievement. Wood joined Scouting in 2000. Since then he has worked 121 hours on service projects, spent 57 nights camping, hiked over 92 miles and earned 25 merit badges. He has held many leadership positions within the troop, including patrol leader, quartermaster, historian, scribe, and O.A. representative. This year Wood attended the competitive Merit Badge Jamboree at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md, and, for his Eagle Scout project, provided Amber Alert cards for the children of Sharon Elementary School. He currently serves as assistant Scoutmaster. The court of honor opened with a flag ceremony led by Life Scout Zeke Wood, and was convened by Christopher Loyer, the district executive of the Green Mountain Council. Honored guests were welcomed by master of ceremonies, Nick Bishop, and Fr. Kenneth Ridgeway gave an invocation. Guest speaker Chip Baldwin presented the Eagle Scout requirements, reviewed Wood’s Scouting history, and gave a vivid speech on the importance of character traits such as honesty and integrity. Wood was presented with letters of congratulation from presidents, senators, congressmen and other local and national organizations. Finally, Scoutmaster Richard Kent gave the Eagle charge and presented Wood with the Eagle medal. |
