Rev. Jane Huber Is Ordained
In the United Church of Christ

Jane Elizabeth Huber, summer minister at the East Barnard Church, was ordained as clergy in the United Church of Christ (UCC) Sunday, Oct. 28.

The ceremony was held in Christ Chapel at the Riverside Church in New York City. Local residents Elizabeth Ferry and Karen Thorkilsen of East Barnard, and Heather Leavitt, Maria Lamson, and Toni Hover of South Royalton, participated in the ceremony. Huber’s stole, a ceremonial sign of her ordination, was made by East Barnard church member and quilter Polly Leavitt.

Thorkilsen and Lamson joined voices with members of the Riverside Choir in singing two original compositions: words from the Gospel of Matthew arranged by Huber and the benediction, "Peace I Leave with You," set by Huber’s husband, composer Chandler Carter. Soprano soloist Diana Solomon Glover, who gave a well-received concert in East Barnard in 2006, sang "Balm in Gilead." Ferry and Leavitt shared a reading from the Gospel of John.

Rev. Huber has led summer and Christmas Eve services at the East Barnard Church since 2004. She is a graduate of Union Theological Seminary and Yale Divinity School, where she earned a certificate in sacred music. During the academic year, she works with programs for children and youth at Park Slope Methodist Church in Brooklyn, N.Y., while pursuing doctoral studies at Union.

Rev. Huber will lead the Christmas Eve service at the East Barnard Church December 24 at 5 p.m. The community is invited to attend.
