Springer Will Randolph Selectman Steve Springer confirmed this week that he will step down from the board when his two-year term expires at March Town Meeting. Springer suffered a heart attack this June and is trying to cut back his schedule. He tried to resign from the board this summer, he noted, but the rest of the board never accepted his resignation. He did step down as liaison to the budget committee, however. One candidate has already indicated his interest in the selectboard position. Joe Voci, the former superintendent of public works for Randolph, has collected enough signatures on a petition to put his name on the ballot as a candidate, he said yesterday. Selectman Damon Lease, who was appointed to the board a year ago when Dawn Butterfield resigned, hopes to continue in that position, and he will run for the second open seat, it was indicated. Springer had an unusually active first two years on the board. He became liaison with the Budget Committee, a major time commitment, and was chair of both the Town Forest Committee and the Conservation Committee, while participating fully in water and sewer issues, including extensive testing of the Randolph Center sewer line. The decision to step down was a hard one, he said yesterday: "I enjoyed it, and I felt I was contributing to the town." But considering his health issues, there were just a few too many meetings, he said. He hopes to keep active in issues around conservation and the town forest, he said. |
