Like most during the Christmas season I have occasion to pick up some gifts or decorations or some ornaments at this place or that. Something that has struck me this year (maybe I’ve missed it other years), is the absence of Christian symbolism—I see lots of Santa Clauses, reindeer, snowmen, wreaths or Christmas trees and other wintry stuff, but only an occasional angel or manger scene. What happened to Jesus? He’s the one that Christmas is all about. He’s the one who came to earth after thousands of years of expectation—the prophets had made various announcements throughout the previous years of anticipation. It is undeniable that He is the one that they were talking about. Even our lone congressman, The Honorable Peter Welch, voted for a resolution recognizing Ramadan, but against a very similar resolution recognizing Christmas—What happened to Jesus? What did He do that has caused such wrath that our whole system of government would cast him out of public recognition? Christmas is supposed to be a celebration of the birth of our great Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. Where else in scripture do the angels sing out "Glory to God" but when the announcement of His birth is made in the presence of the wise men? The account is like this: "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God, in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." They were talking about Jesus! As for me—I am leaving Santa Claus and snowmen and that other winter celebration stuff on the shelf in the store—I want to see Jesus! A most Merry Christmas to all!
