The Randolph boys’ basketball squad won in dramatic fashion Thursday the 20th, overcoming the Oxbow Olympians, 40-38 at the buzzer. The 1-2 Ghosts, playing their second home game of the year, were looking to put a handle on Oxbow. However the Olympians proved to be tougher competition than was expected. Randolph was only able to muster seven points in the first quarter on way to a 7-5 lead. The second quarter featured much more scoring on both sides. Randolph was able to score off their regular set, well on the offensive side, but was unable to gain a sizable lead, due to two Oxbow three-pointers. Near the end of the half, Randolph came up with a seven-point lead, but saw it diminish to just three points as the buzzer sounded. In the third quarter, Randolph increased their lead to seven once more, off a Jon White basket and an alley-oop to Andrew McClure. But once again, Oxbow brought it down. The score at the end of the third quarter was 32-27, with Randolph ahead. The fourth quarter featured an exciting finish, but Randolph’s sub-par play almost gave the game up. Randolph had many opportunities to put the game out of the reach from the foul line, but shot dismally from the charity stripe. After tying the game up at 38 apiece, and a pair of missed foul shots by Randolph, Oxbow came into possession of the ball with 54 seconds left. The ball was held on the perimeter until the 10-second mark, when Oxbow made their move. Oxbow senior Jimmy Fandino drove to the basket, but was forced into a travel by the help side defense. Randolph got the ball and, after breaking the Oxbow press to half-court, called time out with 2.4 seconds remaining. On the inbound play, the ball was passed to White in the corner who, after pump faking his man and taking a step inside, swooshed the jumper as the buzzer rang to give Randolph the win 40-38. Randolph improves to 2-2 with the win, and will face Peoples Academy home on Friday the 28th. The JV lost their game, 50-30. ____________ |
