I am writing today to let your readers know about a very important historic preservation project in Royalton village. The steeple on the First Congregational Church is seriously in need of repair and the small congregation has been working diligently to raise funds. The building was built in 1839. The "S-O-S" (Save Our Steeple) Committee, with the help of eight volunteers from Bright House, recently sent out a town-wide appeal. Donations came in from all parts of town, from Bethel, Tunbridge, Sharon and even from out-of-state. These donations have helped raise the S-O-S Fund to within about $20,000 of the $65,000 goal. Although there is more work to be done, the recent support of all the friends and neighbors of the church makes me hopeful that this project will be completed soon. It will be wonderful to see a new, white steeple on this lovely building in the near future. I understand that there will shortly be a "thermometer" sign posted in front of the church so that people passing by can track the progress of the fundraising. If I may speak for the church and the committee, thank you, everyone, for your continued support. Elizabeth (Betty) Frary Save Our Steeple Committee Royalton |
