Randolph Guy Ghosts Win Two By David Cooch The Randolph Guy Ghosts traveled to Peoples Academy on Wednesday the 9th to avenge their 33-32 home loss against them earlier in the season. This game featured the awaited return of Randolph center Thomas Jacobs. Randolph had to face a smaller court, and an intrusive Peoples’ zone defense, and only mustered a four-point lead at half. In the second half the Ghosts’ lead ballooned to 17 points, coming from their strong defense. Peoples’ press in the final quarter nearly got the best of Randolph, as PA had the lead down to eight and the momentum. Randolph was able to hold it out for the victory. The JV won with a last-second shot by Mike Hill. The Montpelier Game Randolph visited Montpelier last Friday in a high-scoring contest. The Ghosts came out well to start the match, going up 11-5, and forcing a Montpelier time out with two minutes remaining in the first. That would be the last lead Randolph would see all night, however, as an ensuing 7-0 run put Montpelier up 12-11, and 18-15 at the end of the quarter. Montpelier’s scoring continued, with Randolph turnovers turned into points for the Solons. The halftime score was 37-26, Monpelier. The second half saw scoring from Thomas Jacobs and Jon White for the Ghosts, while Tyler Everett did the same for the Solons. The Ghosts, while outpacing themselves on offense, did not show the same defensive pressure that they typically show, and found themselves down 19 points going into the final quarter. Randolph came out with the full-court man press to get themselves back into the game, and while it led to Montpelier turnovers, and points for Randolph, it also led to open court chances and points for Montpelier. The lead was down from 23 to 13 at the halfway mark of the fourth quarter, due to the press, and later was as low as 12, but it never came closer. The game ended with an 85-68 Montpelier victory. Jacobs, in his second game back from shoulder surgery, had 27 points, and White added 26 to account for a majority of the Randolph scoring. The JV team lost as well. The Northfield Game Randolph hosted Northfield on Monday in their second meeting of the year. The first contest was taken by Randolph by a point in double overtime, in their first game of the year. But this game was going to be a totally different contest. Randolph and Northfield came out evenly matched, and it looked to be another barn burner, but when Northfield went ahead 7-6 in the first, that was as good as it was going to get for them. Randolph was ahead 12-7 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter, and the rest of the game was all Randolph. They came out with a 22-0 run that put them up 34-7 before Northfield could answer. Jacobs enjoyed continued success from this return, posting his men up well. The third quarter saw Northfield score evenly with Randolph, but the gap remained the same. In the final eight minutes, Randolph held Northfield to one point, and ended the game up 59-22. Jacobs was the game high scorer with 24 points, and White added 18 of his own. Jason Hicks controlled the glass well with 13 rebounds, and Randolph had seven Ghosts put up points, including sophomore Dylan Smith with seven. The JV team lost at the buzzer. Randolph improves to 4-6, and will host Division II powerhouse Harwood on Friday, and U-32 on Wednesday. ____________ |
