Raiders Out-play Ghosts By Ten

By Hannah Becker

The Randolph Lady Ghosts varsity basketball team traveled to U-32 on Tuesday to face a tough Raiders squad. The Ghosts came close, but lost, 44-34.

Randolph started out strong in the first, with a full court press and tough defense on the half court. But U-32 scored first and it seemed like the Ghosts were always just a basket behind even with shots from Gwen Reis, Hannah Becker, Arielle Connolly and Katie Jickling. U-32 had tough defense and out-rebounded the Ghosts, leading them after the first quarter, 11-8.

The second quarter was much of the same as the Ghosts laid back on defense and let U-32 control the pace of the game. The Raiders took advantage of the situation and went ahead 23-14. The Ghosts offense was also slow in the quarter, only scoring six points. Randolph was not boxing out, which kept them out of the rebounding match-up and limiting their chances of shots under the basket. The Raiders went into a stall offense with two minutes left in the half and the Ghosts couldn’t defend it and weren’t able to get the ball back enough to score some much needed points.

In the third quarter Randolph came out with their zone press again, making U-32 work for everything they got. The offense sped up and the Ghosts started to control the pace of the game once again. Randolph had good ball rotation on offense, but Randolph still wasn’t boxing out. Randolph couldn’t keep U-32 from putting the ball in the hoop and were outscored 14-10 in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was a game of catch up for Randolph. They had to speed up the pace of the game, and take good quality shots, while also playing strong defense. It was a hard task, as U-32 likes to play slow. Randolph was down by 13 at the beginning of the half but managed to get the lead down to just 9 with 4:50 left in the game. Lack of fundamentals kept Randolph from the win. The Ghosts fall to 2-9 on the season.

Scoring in the game was G. Reis with 12, Lindsay Smith with 6, Connolly, Becker, and Amanda Bowen 4 each, and Jickling and Javon Miller 2 each.

The Lady Ghosts return home on Thursday against Lyndon and play Northfield on Saturday, also home. JV starts at 1:00 and Varsity at 2:30.
