Lady Hornets Split Four Games
By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier

It was a double dose of disappointment for the Whitcomb Lady Hornets when they faced the Craftsbury Chargers twice in less than a week. They lost by one measly point, 41-40, last Thursday in Bethel, after having lost five days earlier 48-37 in make-up action on the road.

At Craftsbury, it was the Chargers leading from start to finish. While the Hornets only managed six points in the opening quarter, Craftsbury scored 14. Whitcomb came back stronger in the second period and cut the Charger lead to 18-4 entering the break.

Craftsbury poured it on when they returned from the break, and took a commanding 16-point lead at the end of the third period. The Hornets almost doubled their score with an 18-point fourth , but at the whistle, they were still short by 11. Charger Lindsay Sedore was game-high with 23 points followed by Hornet Molly Taylor with 16 points. Hornets Laurel Adams and Demi Aldrighetti finished with 9 and 8 points respectively.

In Bethel, the chargers led 10-6 after one; 24-18 at halftime; 32-26 after three, before capping the upset over their Hornet hosts with the one-point win. Molly Taylor had 15 points for Whitcomb while teammate Laurel Adams led all scorers with a game-high 18 points.

Win Over Crusaders

For the second game in a row, senior Laurel Adams led the way, as the Whitcomb Lady Hornets defeated their United Christian Academy Crusader hosts 42-38 for their fifth victory of the season in Newport last Saturday, Feb. 2. Adams scored more than half of the Hornet points with a game-high 22. Molly Taylor followed with 14 points.

A 14-point first period had the Hornets in the lead by six, 14-8 after one. And they still remained up by six at the break, 23-17, after both teams matched points in the second period with nine each.

The Websterville Baptist Christian School Warriors came to Bethel Monday, Feb. 4 and faced the Hornets for the second time this season, and once again left the building respectfully beaten.

Tia McKenna scored the opening hoop, followed by baskets from Emily Wright and Molly Taylor, and then McKenna added one free-toss for a 7-zip lead over the Warrior, and one had a hunch which team was in charge. Six more points by Taylor and one freebie by Adams solidified that. The Warriors’ only points came from a foul shot by eighth grader Lauren LePerle, and a Katie Perry basket just before the buzzer. Wright and Adams added five points for a 19-11 lead at the break.

Whitcomb shut out their guests in the third period with a 16-0 run, with Taylor nabbing eight points Aldrighetti four, and Wright and Adams each scoring a basket. Adams finished the night with a last basket as the Hornets cruised to victory, 41-16. Hornets Wright, McKenna and Adams combined for 21 points with each scoring seven points, while Taylor led all scorers with 16.

Whitcomb is scheduled to play the Concord Wildcats tonight at 6 p.m., TSA Phoenix on Monday at 7 p.m., and the Twinfield Trojans one week from today on Valentine’s Day— "Senior Night"—at 7 p.m. All three games are in Bethel.

Senior Night will honor Laurel Adams, Demi Aldrighetti, Tia McKenna, Molly Taylor, Brittany Washburn and Emily Wright.
