Rough Week For Lady Hornets By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier After being postponed and rescheduled twice, the Whitcomb Lady Hornets finally made the short bus trip to South Royalton and faced the Lady Royals for the second tie this season. And for the second time the Hornets left the court empty-handed as they lost to their hosts by 17 in the 49-32 contest. Early in the season South Royalton needed extra time to beat Whitcomb in Bethel as the pesky Hornets, who trailed the Royals all through the game, finally tied things up, with 4.4 seconds remaining in regulation, and held on to force OT. That was not the case this time. With Molly Taylor still out of town, the Hornets found themselves down by 10 after the first period. A Whitcomb rally during the second quarter erased the deficit and had the Hornets up by one point at the half, 23-22. During the third period the Hornets fizzled, scoring only three points, while the Royals sizzled scoring 13 points. In the final period, Whitcomb added nine more points to their tally, while South Royalton scored an additional 14 points in the win. Royal Callie Jozefiak scored a game-high 23 points followed by Hornet Laurel Adams with 14 points. Senior Night Whitcomb bid farewell to seven Lady Hornets and five Lady Trojans on Senior night last Thursday in Bethel. Suiting up for their last home game were Laurel Adams, Demi Aldrighetti, Willow Griffith, Tia McKenna, Molly Taylor, Brittany Washburn and Emily Wright. Twinfield and Whitcomb faced each other their only meeting of the season, and from the get-go it was the Trojans in control. Down by a dozen at the break, Whitcomb only managed an additional 10 points through the remainder of the contest while Twinfield more than doubled their halftime tally, with 38 more points, for a 69-41 upset victory. Hornet Molly Taylor led all scorers with 20 points followed by Trojan Camille duPont with 17 points. Twinfield’s Vanessa Powers was next with 15 points and Whitcomb’s Laurel Adams was right behind her with 14 points. Loss to TSA Just a week ago the Hornets fell to visiting TSA by 24 points, but in Saturday’s make-up game it was a much closer contest. For Whitcomb, it was, unfortunately, still a loss. Taylor was the game’s high scorer with 16 points which was two/thirds of the 24 points game tally. TSA’s Annie McRay repeated as the top Phoenix scorer against the Hornets, with 10 points in the 26-point outing. Described as a "defensive battle" by Sharon coach Gordon Barnaby, both teams were in it for the win and at the break it was a 12-11 Phoenix advantage. Both teams were able to hold a scoring ace back, as Whitcomb managed to hold Elyza Chadwick to three points while TSA managed to shut down Laurel Adams completely. The win gives TSA a 12-6 record while Whitcomb stands at 5-14. Whitcomb finishes the season on the road in Rochester where the Hornets hope to avenge their season opening Bean Pot loss to the Rockettes. ____________ |
