Whitcomb Junior/Senior High School music teacher Sarah Helman has received the "Outstanding New Music Educator of the Year" award from the Vermont Music Educators Association (VMEA).

Helman grew up in Barre and went to college at Wesleyan College in West Virginia. Teaching at Whitcomb is her first job out of college. She has taught instrumental music, music theory and music appreciation classes there for three years.

A member of both the National Association for Music Educators (MENC) and the VMEA, Helman was nominated by another music educator within the state of Vermont and chosen by the executive board of the VMEA.

Whitcomb principal Andy West said, "We are very proud of Ms. Helman. She is extremely dedicated to advancing music and the arts at Bethel Elementary and Whitcomb Jr.-Sr. High School."

This will be Helman’s last year teaching at Whitcomb as her position has been cut due to budget considerations.

"Vermont has been good to me and I will be sad to leave," Helman said. "Music is my passion. I love to share it with others."
