Rochester Rockets beat their biggest rival, Whitcomb, 7-5 in Thursday's game on the 24th, in Bethel. There was a lot of talk about how fast Whitcomb's pitcher Molly Taylor had become, and sure enough the rumors were true. Even standing as far back in the batter's box as possible when the Rockets were up at bat, Taylor had three quick strike-outs and a no-hitter in the next inning. In the top of the third inning Vanessa Mongeur finally got a piece of the ball, hitting it to left field, making her the first person on base. Going into the sixth inning the score was 4-2, Whitcomb. Both teams were having a hard time getting on base. After the second inning Taylor had eight more of her total 14 strikeouts. Finally in the seventh inning the Rockets showed their true colors, getting good hits and reaching first base. The top of the batting order revealed their skills as all four made it home. Desiree Bourassa started things off with a wild pitch, that saw her at first base. Bourassa then stole second and third, leaving her in a prime position to score. Miranda Shepard snuck on first after a dropped third strike by the catcher. With two runners on base, Bennett McPhetres stepped up to the plate and got hold of a ball, sailing it over the right fielder's head, sending two runners home and ending up on third. Megan Pratt was up next getting a base hit, sending McPhetres home and eventually stealing home herself. After the third out, the score was in Rochester's favor 7-4. In the bottom of the seventh, just like Rochester, Whitcomb's top of the batting order was up. The Rockets needed to play some extraordinary defense. Emily Wright had a hit to right field for a base hit. Bourassa caught a fly ball, making the first out and pitcher Megan Pratt had a crucial strike-out, making the second out. Whitcomb’s Taylor sailed one over the left fielder's head, but Rochester's outfielder Alicia Waite made the quick throw into the pitcher. Taylor was halfway to second, but on her way back to first, M. Pratt fired the ball to Mongeur, who quickly made the tag for the 3rd out. Rochester came back from a 4-2 deficit to win by two, 7-5. Rockets vs. Cabot Rochester maintained its winning streak by beating Cabot 4-1 and 22-13 in a double-header on April 26th at home. Bourassa started the first game with a base hit, followed by McPhetres' triple to left field. After that, the inning ended pretty fast for the Rockets, as they had three quick groundouts. The Rockets made it up in defense by only allowing one Cabot batter to reach base. Nothing changed in the second, third, or fourth innings, as the Rockets made three quick outs each time. M. Pratt gave up only five hits during the whole game. Cabot finally got some action in the fifth inning, with three base hits and one run home. The game ended 4-1, and after a 10-minute break the next game began. Second Game The second part of the double-header started much like the last. Rochester, being the away team, was up at bat first and made four runs home. In the field they still had amazing defense, not letting Cabot score for two more innings. Rockets were on fire in the second inning, having back-to-back home runs by McPhetres and Shepard. Mongeur and Pratt each had doubles as well. Watching the final four innings was like watching two different teams from the previous game. Rockets made 15 runs home and Cabot had 12. When Cabot finally broke out the bats they continuously kept hitting balls far into the outfield. The Rockets also had great hits: Pratt with a triple to center, and Waite and Mongeur each having a home run. The Rockets kept trying to end it by the 15-run rule but Cabot wouldn't let up. The game lasted all the way into the 7th, leaving the score at 22-13, giving the Rockets their fifth "W" in their 5-0 season. The Rochester Rockets play their next game on Thursday versus South Royalton at home. ____________ |
