RUHS Softball Team Wins 3 More
By Hannah Becker

The Randolph varsity softball team played three games this week picking up a win over Northfield, and two against Montpelier, bringing its record to 5-2.

Win vs. Northfield

The Gal ghosts played at home on Wednesday, versus Northfield. Although Randolph came away with a 2-1 win, the team didn't play up to its level. Randolph started off the first inning with two hits but was not able to score. The Ghosts’ defense wasn't on top of its game either, with three errors, two of which came from the outfield. Randolph finally got their bats going in the fifth inning, scoring two runs. Heather Mugford started Randolph off with a bunt single, moved to third on a Katie Jickling sacrifice bunt and scored on an Arielle Connolly bunt single. Amanda Gersteinmaier came up to the plate with a two-base hit that moved Connolly to third, who later scored on a pass ball. Northfield tried to stage a comeback in the sixth inning, scoring on a double and a Randolph error.

The Ghosts managed to hold them off for the remainder of the game, walking away with a 2-1 win. Mugford was 3-3 and Connolly was 2-3. Amanda Angell pitched for Randolph, going 7 IP, 1 BB, 4 K, and 0 ER.

Montpelier D.H.

The Ghosts traveled to Montpelier on Saturday for a double-header. Randolph started the morning off strongly, scoring eight runs in the first inning on three hits, four walks, one sacrifice fly, and a Montpelier error. Montpelier also put two runs on the board in the first inning on two walks and three pass-balls. But after the first inning Randolph pitcher Angell calmed down and it was all Randolph from then on.

The Ghosts scored five runs in both the second and the third innings and then three more in each of the fourth and fifth innings. The umpires called the game in five innings with Randolph up by 21 runs. Randolph collected 18 walks in the first and added 12 hits for the 23-2 win. Angell was two-for-four while Ashley Chase went 3-4. Angell pitched for Randolph going 5 IP, 2 BB, 2 H, 3 K, 2 ER.

With the second game came another great win for Randolph and an outstanding pitching performance from Randolph's Connolly. The Ghosts started off a little slower in game two, only scoring two runs in the first inning and three in the second. But backed by a no-hit performance up to that point, Randolph's bats sparked and the Ghosts scored five runs in both the 3rd and 4th innings.

It wasn't until the top of the fifth that Connolly's no-hit dreams were put on hold. Montpelier's shortstop took one good swing and sent a ball to center field. Randolph finished the game strong, and again it was called in the fifth inning, by the 15 run rule. Randolph won the match 15-0.

Mugford was 1-1 while Jickling went 4-4. Connolly pitched a shutout with 5 IP, 1 BB, 1 H, 10 K, 0 ER.

The Ghosts travel to Vergennes on Thursday and then they face Lyndon at home on Saturday for a rematch of a very good game earlier this season. The team would really appreciate your support.
