Labeling People Disrespects Them Labeling People Disrespects Them In recent months I seem to have been hearing and seeing the word "flatlander" more and more. While I accept that sometimes this term is used as an affectionate label, often nowadays I find it used in a derogatory manner—which makes it resonate of bigotry, along with all those with other similar words that sneeringly deride those who are perceived to be different in some way, either because of the color of their skin, their religious persuasion, maybe their sexual orientation. Or, in the case of the appellation "flatlanders", because they have come to make a home in this area from some other state or country. Every single one of us billions of human beings is different, that is one of the marvels of this planet Such diversity brings untold chances to expand our knowledge of this world and its occupants. Let us try to appreciate people for the good things that they do and not be critical of where they come from, what they believe in or who they live with. With so much anger everywhere today, would it not be better for those of us who are lucky enough to live here in small, caring communities to solve our local problems, not with snide name-calling, but with kindness, understanding and a true desire for peace?
