Mint Henk's Secret Finally Revealed

Mint Henk's Secret Finally Revealed

Like many Central Vermonters I've taken great interest and felt a vicarious sense of pride at the accomplishments of cross country champion Mint Henk. Where did this kid come from? And how did he get to be so good? Now, the truth can be told.

In 1984 Mint's mother, Barbara Carter, ran her first and only road race, the West Brookfield Classic. The course is known for its rugged terrain, which brings even veteran runners to their knees.

Undaunted, Barbara finished first, a remarkable achievement made even more remarkable by the fact that she was pregnant with Mint at the time.

Mint crossed the finish line as a champion before he was even born! With a pedigree like this, there's no telling what he will accomplish.

The Classic, first run in 1981, continues to be run by a dwindling, increasingly fanatical group of "heirloom" athletes.
