The Halcyon Quartet Performs July 7 at Rochester Church

The Rochester Chamber Music Society will present The Halcyon Quartet at the Rochester Federated Church on Rte. 100 in Rochester Sunday, July 7 at 4 p.m., with a pre-concert talk by Larry Hamberlin at 3:30 p.m. No admission is charged, but donations are appreciated.

The program will include Peter Schickele’s quartet for clarinet, violin, cello and piano; Beethoven’s "Trio Opus 38" for clarinet, cello and piano; Weill’s "Threepenny Opera Suite" for clarinet, violin, cello and piano, arranged by Moore, and Paul Schoenfield’s "Cafe Music" for violin, cello and piano.

Featured artists are clarinetist, Lee Livengood; violinist, Terry Moore; cellist, Sarah Schenkman; and pianist, Melissa Livengood.

The second and bass clarinetist for the Savannah Symphony, Livengood is a native of Alstead, N.H. He earned a Bachelors Degree from the Eastman School of Music and a Masters from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He has been a member of the Tulsa Philharmonic, Fresno Philharmonic and Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra and has taught clarinet at Keene State College, the University of California at Santa Barbara and Georgia Southern University. As a chamber musician, Livengood has performed at a number of festivals. In addition to his work as a performer, he collects and re-faces clarinet mouthpieces.

A member of the Savannah Symphony since 1992, violinist Terry Moore is from Rochester, Minn. He has music degrees from Indiana University and The Catholic University of America and has studied with Daniel Guilet, Dorothy DeLay and Lorand Fenyves. While serving in the U.S. Army he was a member of the "Strolling Strings," performing frequently for the President at the White House. Moore was a member of the Toronto Symphony and for nine years was concertmaster of the Florida Orchestra, where he also was Assistant Conductor. He co-founded the youth orchestra in Tampa.

Sarah Schenkman, also a member of the Savannah Symphony since 1992, began her musical training with her family and continued her studies with Ronald Leonard and Claus Adams. She has performed with the Florida West Coast Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, the National Ballet of Canada, the Richmond Symphony and the Aspen Festival Orchestra. In 2000, she attended the New Directions Cello Festival in Storrs, Conn. and her article about the event was published in "Tutti Celli" and "Cello City Ink." This past year she played chamber music concerts in Jesup and Savannah, Ga. and performed Tom Flaherty’s "Semi-Suite" at the Sentient Bean Coffee House.

Melissa Livengood has degrees in art history and piano from Willamette University, a Masters in music performance from the University of Oregon and a DMA in piano performance from The Catholic University of America. As a recipient of a Rotary Scholarship, she studied piano in Belgium. She currently teaches piano and theory at Armstrong Atlantic State University, plays keyboard with the Savannah Symphony and is active as a vocal coach and chamber musician, often performing with her husband, Lee.
