Charles S. Stephen

Montpelier—Charles S. Stephens, 97, formerly of Lynnfield, Mass., died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center, after several months of failing health.

He was born in Revere, Mass. June 17, 1906, the eldest son of James C. and Alice (Stedman) Stephen.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Barbara (Hill) Stephen of Montpelier; three sons and their wives: Charles Jr., and Pat of Lincoln, Nebr. and Owls Head, Maine; Sanders H. and Mary L. of Braintree; and Mark L. and Susan O. of East Montpelier; nine grandchildren: Deborah of Lincoln, Nebr.; Susan of Upper Marlboro, Md.; David of Duluth, Minn.; Karl of Parker, Colo.; Bruce of Lincoln, Nebr.; Melissa of Montague, Mass.; Joshua of Braintree, and Andrew and Liz, both of East Montpelier; plus 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard of Laconia, N.H. and James of Palm Coast, Fla.; two sisters, Nadine Booker of Harwich, Mass. and Dorothy Gile of Reading, Mass.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He had been general manager of Hill & Co./Melrose News, located in Melrose and Wakefield, Mass. for over 45 years, before beginning his retirement.

A memorial service will be held at the Old Meetinghouse in East Montpelier, Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1:30 p.m.
