Vorcza at Vt. College Nov. 15 Vorcza at Vt. College Nov. 15 The Vermont-rooted jazz trio, Vorcza, will appear in an ensemble performance at Vermont College Hall Chapel Saturday, Nov. 15 at 8 p.m., with special guests from New York City, Josh Roseman on trombone and Peter Apfelbaum on saxophone, presented by the Green Mountain Jazz Series. Vorcza, with Rob Morse on bass, Gabe Jarrett on drums, and Ray Paczkowski on Hammond organ and piano, features sophisticated bass grooves with influences ranging from tangos and sambas to free jazz and classical composers Stravinsky and Bach. The trio’s first recording, "Maximalist," which spawned an enthusiastic response, was recorded at Trey Anastasio’s recording studio in Spring 2002. Morse and Paczkowski have both performed with Anastsio, and Gabe Jarrett is the son of world-renowned musician and composer Keith Jarrett. Guest artist Josh Roseman, who in 1988 began a long association with World Saxophone Quartet altoist/composer Oliver Lake, has also worked with clarinetist Don Byron. Lester Bowie featured Roseman regularly with his Brass Fantasy, and he has also played with the Grammy Award-winning Dave Holland Big Band, which headlined in last summer’s Discover Jazz Festival. Guest artist Peter Apfelbaum, originally from Berkeley, Calif. is best known as leader of the San Francisco-based avant-garde big band the Hieroglyphics Ensemble, which often featured legendary trumpeter Don Cherry. The Ensemble was nominated for a 1991 Grammy Award, and opened several shows for the Grateful Dead. Now living in Brooklyn, Apfelbaum’s more recent projects range from using a sextet to giving solo piano recitals. His music has been performed by the Kronos Quartet, and he teaches at Long Island University. Concert Coordinator Dan Haley notes, "We’re very excited to have Vorcza with special guests Josh Roseman and Peter Apfelbaum as part of this year’s Green Mountain Jazz Series. The Vorcza Trio has made a strong impression on the Central Vermont community as part of a ‘wave’ of groups along with Tala, Voice, Leon Tubbs, and Down Boi. Rob Morse, along with some members of these groups, played with the legendary ViperHouse, and continue that tradition of combining jazz with elements of funk, rock and even hip-hop to create a very danceable form of music. We’re looking forward to a stimulating evening of creative listening music, including selected tunes from Monk, Mingus and others." Tickets are available at the Barre Opera House Box Office (476-8188, credit cards accepted.) For more info call Haley at 223-2846, or call 223-7167 to sign up as a volunteer for the concert. ____________ |
