Sharon Academy Participating In ‘Operation Day’s Work’ Sharon Academy Participating In ‘Operation Day’s Work’ Operation Day’s Work (ODW) is up and running at The Sharon Academy (TSA). A student-run organization which raises money to educate underprivileged youth in a country of one’s choice, ODW is doing so by sending American youth to work for a day within their communities. Last year was the first year TSA participated in ODW. Over 30 students from the school worked and made over $900 to send to the CHABHA Project in Rwanda. The project that TSA has selected to aid this year is run out of Vermont, and helps Ethiopian orphans. The project is run by the Human Capital Foundation, and will move students from the Selamta Orphanage (also run by the Human Capital Foundation) in Addis Abba, Ethiopia, to trained adoptive Ethiopian families. There will be roughly 10 orphans per family. Along with having a family life, these children will continue to have the health care, education, and AIDS education they were receiving at the Selamta Orphanage. Moving these children into host families will not only benefit them, but also allow Selamta to bring new children into their facility. This proposal was selected by most of the member schools, including TSA. ODW@TSA has already started planning an education day about Ethiopia and ODW and the work days are set to take place May 2 and 19. This year, ODW@TSA hopes to have the entire high school participate, but to do this, they need the help and support of the TSA community. With roughly 120 students currently enrolled at the high school, ODW@TSA is looking for people interested in hiring students to work on the work day. Parents may also hire their own student or send their student off to work for the day. For every $7.50 TSA receives, they will give that student an hour of community service. Many people are amazed at the types of work high school students can do. From cleaning out garages, attics or barns, to filing, fixing computers, babysitting, clearing land, playing office assistant for the day, or just going to their regular job, there are hundreds of ways students can make money. Or if you don’t have anything you need done around the house or the office, donations are always appreciated. If you are interested in hiring a TSA student for an ODW work day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at a fee of $7.50 per hour per student, donating to Selamta, or if you would like more information on ODW and Selamta, call the TSA high school office at 763-2500.
