Two Losses for Lady Hornets Two Losses for Lady Hornets By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier The Whitcomb Lady Hornets lost at home to the traveling Concord Wildcats last week. The Hornets only trailed by one point, 7-6, at the start of the second quarter and by only one basket, 17-15, at the break, before the Wildcats managed to double up on Whitcomb during the final half. Concord scored 13 points in both the third and fourth periods, while limiting the Hornets to eight points each quarter. Concord won, 43-31, for their second victory over their Hornet opponents. Craftsbury’s Krista Young had 11 points. Laurel Adams was high scorer with 16 points and Molly Taylor finished with 10 points for Whitcomb. Loss to TSA Demi Aldrighetti and Adams led the Hornets with eight points and nine points respectively, but it just wasn’t enough, as The Sharon Academy raced past their hosts with a 44-20 win. Whitcomb led during the first period as Adams, Virginia Wortman and Emily Wright scored the Hornets’ seven points. TSA got on the board with five, for a 7-5 Hornet lead. The Phoenix continued to score, adding three quick hoops, and added 12 points before the break. The Hornets remained in the lead off a string of three Aldrighetti baskets, plus another hoop by Adams, for 15 points and a three-point advantage. During the third period, Sharon not only erased the Hornet lead, but held the Hornets to a single free toss deposit. TSA almost tripled their first half tally with a 22-point rally. Sharon finished with five additional baskets, while Aldrighetti and Adams scored one basket each, for a four-point fourth for Whitcomb. Brittany Washburn did a super job playing in place of Molly Taylor, who was unable to play, and Willow Griffith and Brittany Flint did a good job off the bench. Annie McRay led all scorers with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Erin Kinnarny had 10 points and Emily Chadwick finished with 7. Sharon now stands at 9-6 and Whitcomb falls to 5-11. The Hornets play their final home game tonight against the Twinfield Trojans on Senior Night. Game time is 7 p.m. Whitcomb plays the Phoenix this Saturday at 11 a.m., in Sharon, in a rescheduled contest, and finishes the regular season in Rochester on Tuesday against the Rockettes.
