Sharon Academy Wins Science Bowl Sharon Academy Wins Science Bowl On Saturday, April 5, students at the Sharon Academy Middle School placed first in the Middle School Science Bowl sponsored by the US Department of Energy. Competing for the first time ever, The Sharon Academy sent two teams to this competition. The winning team included students Cedar Farwell of Hartland (eighth grade), Jake Hurwitz of Stockbridge (eighth grade), Evan Roe of West Brookfield (seventh grade), and Annabelle Roberts of Hartland (eighth grade). As the regional competition between students from Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, Saturday’s Science Bowl operated as a form of double elimination Jeopardy between opposing teams. Students had to answer questions on general science, earth science, physical science, life science, and mathematics. "Some of these questions were tough," says Christian Durgin, a math and science teacher at The Sharon Academy Middle School who also coached the teams. "There were a few questions that stumped even me, and many that I was shocked the students remembered." "There is no doubt that the students did a great job in the competition, but what is most important to me is just the level of enthusiasm these students had throughout the competition," Durgin added. "Seeing how much fun the students were having inspired me as a teacher. Honestly. I was so encouraged by what the students remembered, how well they competed, and their level excitement in testing their own knowledge." As their prize for winning this competition, the students have won an all expense paid trip to Golden Colorado to compete in the National contest in June. |
