TSA Boys Retain Undefeated Status By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier

The boys from The Sharon Academy are still undefeated. They handed, first, the D-III Putney School the loss with two unanswered goals last Wednesday on the road, for the eighth season victory and sixth shutout, and then claimed the season sweep of neighboring Whitcomb Tuesday in Bethel with their second 6-0 shutout against their Hornets’ hosts this season.

Win at Putney

Usually at some point in the first half the Phoenix are well on their way, but that wasn’t the case in the Putney game. It took them a while to get there, as they did not score until just past the midway point of the second half, when leading Phoenix scorer Colin Pope set up leading assist-maker Michael Young-Ward for the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute. Three minutes later, Pope deposited the second and final goal of the game, when he was fouled and earned a penalty kick that he delivered, capping the scoring in the outing.

TSA had lots of chances, taking 22 shots at goal, but found it difficult to make any noise until well into the game. Brad Farrell faced six shots, the most he has faced this season, stopping them all.

Win Over Bethel

Against the Hornets, Sharon struck pay dirt four times during the first half before finishing up with two second-half deposits. The combo of Otto Pierce and Pope had TSA in the lead at 15:00, when Pope sent the orb to Pierce for the initial score, then followed by putting his own deposit past goalie Joel Wright, unassisted at 20:00. A Pope feed to Hannes Fischer-Byrne had TSA up three-zip next, before Pierce and Evan Frank partnered up for Pierce’s second goal of the game at 30:00, and four unanswered goals before the break.

In the second half, Young-Ward fed first Eric Littlehales and then Duncan Nelson with the fifth and sixth Phoenix goals. Farrell made one save in the game, while Wright faced 35 shots and made 29 saves.

TSA faces the Twinfield Trojans this Saturday, Oct. 4 in Sharon at 4 p.m., and then hosts the Rochester Rockets, Monday, Oct. 6, also at 4 p.m.
