Lady Ghosts Win & Tie
Against Tough Opponents
Lady Ghosts Win & Tie Against Tough Opponents By Hannah Becker The Randolph varsity girls soccer team had another great week picking up a win at home against Northfield, and a tie at North Country. Win vs. Northfield Randolph played Northfield at home on Wednesday, facing the Marauders for the second time this season. They won the first match up 2-0. Wednesday's game was the best game the Ghosts have played all season; they did everything to their best ability, and played a complete game. In the first half Randolph needed to come out strong, knowing the Marauders were looking for revenge. They did just that. Arielle Connolly scored at the 36:35 mark in the first half assisted by Amanda Bowen. The Ghosts didn't let up and the continued to completely dominate the first half, getting six shots on goal. The second half was a more even game, being played mostly in the mid-field. However, Randolph's defense was dominant, as it has been all season, not letting in a tying goal. The Ghost defense and midfield did a good job keeping Northfield under pressure while also allowing their forwards to have offensive chances. Randolph's second goal came with 6:34 left in the game, when Emily Beaudin scored on a penalty kick to put the Ghosts up 2-0, without much time for Northfield to counter-attack. Randolph walked away with the win, making it four straight against the once-dominate Marauders'. Tie at North Country The Ghosts made the long bus trip to Newport early Saturday morning to take on the Divison 1 North Country Eagles. North Country came into the game 7-1, but that didn't scare Randolph away. The Lady Ghosts came away with a tie after double overtime. Randolph came out pretty slow and the Eagles took advantage, beating them to nearly all the fifty-fifty balls, and dominated in their third of the field. But the Eagles had many wide shots and were not able to capitalize on their opportunities, leaving Randolph in the game. Toward the end of the second half, Randolph was able to get the laziness out from the long bus ride and they started playing much better. They were more aggressive and challenged North Country. The half ended with the score at 0-0. The second half was a much more even game. Randolph was challenging North Country on every ball, and began to show some offensive life. The game also became very physical. Both teams were a little too aggressive, and got called for multiple fouls, although no cards were handed out. Again, both teams had their offensive chances, but neither was able to score. Ghost goalie Erika Webber kept the score at zero all with a great diving save late in the second half. Regular time ended with the score still at 0-0. The two overtime periods were evenly matched; both teams had changes that came from direct kicks, due to fouls and offensive pushes. But again, neither team was able to score. The Ghosts were glad to walk away with the 0-0 tie against a tough upper division opponent, after a very physical game that left them banged up. Randolph plays again Thursday at home at 4:00, instead of 4:30, against Stowe. They also travel to Lyndon on Saturday, and return home to play U-32 next Wednesday, October 8th, also a 4 o'clock game. __________ |
