Benefit Concert for SafeArt Will Feature Spencer Lewis Benefit Concert for SafeArt Will Feature Spencer Lewis Spencer Lewis will give a benefit concert for SafeArt, a local arts organization that addresses issues of traumatic abuse, Sunday, Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. at The Sharon Academy. Lewis’ music combines introspective acoustic guitar compositions with the violin. His latest studio recording, "Up on the Mountain," has been described as "grassical music," blending bluegrass and classical. Tom Hill from the Valley News wrote of Lewis, "...his tunes strike an almost mystical balance between melancholia and celebration." Pamela Poston from Seven Days recognized Lewis as "an inventive, serendipitous writer of old-time fiddle tunes with melodies that are as timeless as any they emulate." All proceeds from the concert will benefit SafeArt, a non-profit based in Chelsea, that uses the expressive arts, including poetry, dance, song, and the visual arts, in the prevention, intervention, and recovery from traumatic abuse. SafeArt works especially with adolescents and women in Orange County, and throughout Vermont, to help participants empower themselves through creative self-expression. Robin Junker, associate pastor at Bethany Church in Randolph, describes SafeArt as playing "a vital role in the Randolph area community response to cases of sexual and domestic violence. Without SafeArt, we would not be able to respond so effectively and with such strength." Deb Lary, the Health teacher at RUHS, notes that, "Education is much more cost effective than ignorance. SafeArt offers educational programs that also promote the healing aspect when going through trauma. The youth in our community have had too much trauma and need programs like SafeArt in order to heal." Those who buy tickets for this event to support SafeArt’s work will enjoy a buffet supper and an intimate concert of instrumentals and songs. There will also be a silent auction and one surprise "live" auction item. Tickets will be sold at the door and include food, drinks (including beer and wine), and the concert.
