John Carty and Donal Clancy In Braintree House Concert

Renowned Irish fiddler John Carty will perform with guitarist Donal Clancy at a house concert in Braintree, Sunday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.

Both musicians will also offer workshops for intermediate to advanced players from 2-4 p.m. For ticket cost and reservations, call Beth Telford at 728-6351.

Considered one of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians, Carty has established himself among the elite in Irish traditional music through his mastery of the fiddle, banjo, and flute. The Irish Television station TG4 made him the recipient of its Traditional Musician of the Year Award in 2003.

Already acclaimed for his powerful banjo playing, in 1996 he released his first fiddle album, "Last Night’s Fun," which has been described as a milestone in recorded fiddle music. His has been joined on subsequent recordings by guitarist Arty McGlynn, Alec Finn, Brian McGrath and Johnny McDonagh.

Carty also performs regularly with Chieftain’s flautist Matt Molloy, and Patrick Street and has also appeared as a special guest with the Chieftains and De Danaan.

Clancy is skilled both as an accompanist and as a player of the tunes themselves on the guitar. He took up the guitar under the influence of such Irish guitar greats as Arty McGlynn and Paul Brady, and is also influenced by such modern players as John Renbourn, Stefan Grossman, Archie Fisher, Duck Baker, and Nic Jones.

A co-founder of the group Danu, Clancy has toured with his father Liam Clancy (of Clancy Brothers fame) and his uncle, Robbie O’Connell, as well as Eileen Ivers and Solas. He is featured on the Shanachie Records CD "Masters of the Irish Guitar," and has also appeared in Vermont when accompanying his wife and father-in-law, musicians Mary and Mike Rafferty.
